NHT's Anesthesia System

At NHT, patient comfort isn't just about pain management—it's about creating an experience that feels safe, controlled, and surprisingly pleasant from beginning to end. Based on Dr. Chang’s anesthesiology medical training and over 30 years of hair transplantation experience, we’ve carefully designed an anesthesia system that combines advanced techniques, continuous monitoring, and surgical expertise to create what our patients consistently describe as an unexpectedly comfortable experience.

What Makes NHT's Anesthesia System Unique

Traditional hair transplantation procedures use basic local anesthesia that wears off every few hours, requiring repeated injections throughout the procedure. This approach can cause discomfort, interrupts the surgery, and increases patient anxiety.

NHT’s specialized anesthesia system combines precision nerve blocks, tumescent anesthesia, and optional twilight sedation to create an experience that most patients describe as surprisingly comfortable.

The NHT Multi-Layer Anesthesia System

As hair transplantation can take several hours, we use a combination of anesthesia methods to ensure long-lasting numbness and complete patient relaxation:

Long-Lasting Nerve Block for the Recipient Area

We numb the nerves that supply sensation to the front and top of your scalp using a specialized nerve block technique, Our nerve block provides deep, lasting anesthesia for 6+ hours, often the entire duration of your procedure, eliminating the need for repeated injections that are required when using standard local anesthesia.

During the injection process, we apply gentle vibration to your scalp. This distraction technique significantly reduces the sensation of the needle, making the numbing process much more comfortable. The initial injections take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, after which your scalp becomes fully numb.

Tumescent Anesthesia for the Donor Area

The donor area at the back of your head receives tumescent anesthesia—a specialized solution that provides extended numbness, reduces bleeding, and stabilizes tissue during graft harvesting. This method ensures the donor site remains completely comfortable for hours after the procedure. Combined with FUT procedures, where wounds are sutured and not left open, tumescent anesthesia results in minimal infection risk and faster healing than traditional anesthesia methods.

Optional Twilight IV Sedation for Enhanced Relaxation

For patients who prefer additional comfort during the initial anesthetic injections, we offer Twilight IV sedation. This light sedation helps you stay completely calm and relaxed during the numbing process, making those first 10-15 minutes feel like they pass in seconds.

Twilight sedation keeps you responsive and able to communicate while completely relieving anxiety. Many patients who choose this option report that the sedation made the injection process virtually unnoticeable.

During Your Procedure

Once the anesthesia takes full effect, you'll notice that your scalp feels completely numb. At this point—whether you've had twilight sedation or not—you're fully alert and able to engage with our team.

During the procedure, you're welcome to watch television, listen to music, chat with our team, or simply rest. Many patients take breaks to use the restroom, enjoy lunch, or stretch their legs. The experience is far more comfortable and relaxed than most people anticipate.

Safety and Monitoring

Throughout your entire procedure, our medical team maintains continuous monitoring of your vital signs. We track your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation, ensuring complete safety whether you choose twilight sedation or local anesthesia alone.

You remain awake and able to answer questions and communicate with our team throughout the procedure. This careful balance—alert yet comfortable, monitored yet natural—reflects the precision that defines the NHT approach.

Post-Procedure Comfort

The anesthesia continues working for several hours after your procedure is complete. Most patients report feeling no pain even as they prepare to leave the clinic. Many are able to enjoy a light meal, walk around comfortably, and feel clear-headed before heading home.

Note that patients who opt for Twilight IV sedation cannot drive after the procedure and should arrange for  safe, alternative transportation.
