Potential Side Effects

Hair transplant surgery, like all surgical procedures, may produce temporary side effects during the healing process. Most patients experience few to none of these effects, and when they do occur, they typically resolve on their own or with simple treatment.

Common Temporary Side Effects

Pinkness in Transplanted Area

The newly transplanted area may appear pink with slightly shiny skin. This coloration is normal and fades within two to eight weeks as healing progresses.

Temporary Thinning of Existing Hair

Some pre-existing hair around the transplant area may temporarily thin following surgery. This is a normal part of the healing process, and your existing hair will return to its full condition within a few months.

Minor Bleeding

Light bleeding is normal and typically stops with gentle pressure. Persistent bleeding occurs in approximately one in several hundred cases and rarely requires additional stitching.

Discomfort

Post-surgical discomfort is usually minimal and lasts only a few days. About half of our patients require no pain medication at all, while others manage comfortably with over-the-counter Tylenol for a few days.

Temporary Numbness

Some numbness in the treated area is normal and typically resolves within three to eighteen weeks. This sensation is rarely bothersome or prolonged.

Itching

Mild itching may occur but is typically short-lived and easily managed. Daily shampooing after the initial healing period helps reduce any discomfort.

Swelling

Nearly all patients experience some degree of swelling, particularly in the forehead and around the eyes. Swelling peaks around day four and typically subsides within two to five days. In approximately one in fifty cases, minor bruising may develop around the eyes.

Rare Side Effects

Bruising ("Black Eye") or Forehead Swelling

In approximately 2% of cases, minor bruising around the eyes or swelling of the forehead may develop. This occurs when surgical trauma temporarily affects the microcirculation system that normally manages fluid flow beneath the skin. At NHT, we use steroid injections during surgery as a preventive measure, which successfully prevents swelling in approximately 80% of cases.

If swelling does occur, it typically appears on day three after surgery (more severe cases may appear earlier) and resolves naturally within two days. Click here for a simple technique by which to redirect tissue fluid away from the eye area and significantly reduce the duration and severity of any swelling or bruising that develops.

Hiccups

Approximately 5% of patients experience hiccups following surgery. While the cause isn't fully understood, this side effect usually lasts several hours to a few days. If hiccups persist and interfere with eating or sleeping, we can prescribe medication for relief.

Infection

Infection occurs in approximately one in several thousand cases and responds well to antibiotic treatment. We provide preventive antibiotics before and after your procedure to minimize this risk.

Cyst Formation

Small cysts (typically 2-3mm, similar to small pimples) may occasionally develop in the transplanted area. These usually resolve on their own within a few weeks.

Scarring

Keloid scarring occurs only in predisposed individuals. Hypertrophic scarring significant enough to cause visible ridging is extremely rare, occurring in approximately one in one thousand cases.

All of the above side effects are temporary and manageable. Our team will provide detailed post-operative care instructions and remain available to address any concerns during your recovery.

Treatment for Forehead Swelling and to Prevent Bruising
After Hair Transplant Surgery

In approximately 2% of cases, minor bruising around the eyes may develop. Applying pressure to the forehead is an effective technique by which to reduce the likelihood of this occurance.

Should swelling occur (typically appears on day three after surgery or earlier in more severe cases), follow the below instructions to treat the swelling. Swelling generally resolves itself within two days.
